Stay Out of the Sun Day – July 3rd

Dog-Days

Vampires and gingers rejoice! Today is Stay Out of the Sun Day.

Ever heard of the “Dog Days of Summer?” According to the Farmer’s Almanac, there are 40 days that coincide with the rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. These 40 days start on July 3rd and go through August 11th, and are the times when the summer sun is highest and the temperatures are the hottest.  Sirius is the chief star in the constellation Canis Major, aka “the Big Dog”, and is easy to spot as it is the brightest star in the sky.  Ancient Egyptians are rumored to have used Sirius as their “watchdog” to warn them of the flooding of the Nile.

Stay Out of the Sun Day is a great day to stay in the shade, maybe hang out inside and play some board or video games with your children. Let this day act as a reminder as you enjoy your summer, that there are equally fun activities to do out of the scorching sun. Also remember in these dog days of summer, to keep yourselves and your animals hydrated.

Of course it is also rumored to be “Disobedience Day” so you really don’t have to listen to anything I’m saying if you don’t want to.
