BOOK REVIEW: It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover
Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most.
I heard about It Ends With Us shortly after following Colleen Hoover on Facebook back in June. I kept reading reviews from those with early copies. They were all calling it Colleen’s best work, her most personal story. Review after review, I pined for the book more and more. August could not come fast enough. Luckily for me I was able to score an ARC. However I still picked up the paperback. Have you seen the cover? It’s beautiful.
It Ends With Us is a heavy and personal story about Lily Bloom that includes real life events and inspiration from the author’s life. If you are used to crying and having your heart broken while reading one of Colleen’s books, this is no different. It’s a powerful story that shows an uncommon perspective on a situation people often judge harshly. I’m being vague, I know. I’m trying really hard to say very little. I believe in order to get the full effect it’s best to go in blind. Check your expectations and biases at the door. Just listen (read) and take in the complicated and heart wrenching story that is It Ends With us.
This book was a page turner for me, one I’m unlikely to forget anytime soon. The naked truth is that parents are having Colleen sign copies of this book to give to their children when they grow up. It’s that important. I somehow managed to keep it together while reading the book, but completely fell apart after reading the Author note. Don’t make the same mistake I did, be sure to have tissues handy.
All that being said, I do believe this book deserves a trigger warning. If you are triggered by violence, and physical abuse you may not want to read this book.
