It’s October and we are in the final stretch of 2018. Yes, you read that right. October is two-thirds done and then we have November and December. Scary right? Soon creepy Uncle Sal will be coming over and eating too much of the sweet potatoes and deviled eggs, maybe passing out on the couch with that loud obnoxious snore during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. But, I have something else to offer. My picks for the best games of 2018…so far.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey averages 8 out of 10 stars on many of the score charts, and to top it off; it’s one of the most watched games right now on Twitch. Set in Ancient Greece, Odyssey predates all the other games by several centuries, all the way back to the Peloponnesian War in 431 BCE. You can play Alexios or Kassandra, who are siblings in this war – Spartan gone mercenaries. We see political interests, wartime conflicts from the past that tend to recirculate, but currently, you’ll visit Layla Hassan. Yes, she’s from Origins but plays an integral part in this franchise. Now how exactly do these two-story lines meet? You’ll need to play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey to find out!
Bird? Plane? Nope, that’s Spider-Man! Flying in the air on a magical spider web, seeing the world one skyscraper at a time. Peter Parker gets various versions of his suit. Watching this across the Twitch universe has been exciting and entertaining. The camera angles are fun and exciting, reminiscent of the comic books, sweeping through various frames. Peter Parker is witty and funny with some of the comments that he makes, but also makes ass-kicking fun.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider was incredible and probably one of my favorite games so far. Lara Croft heads off to Mexico and Peru to find the solution to bring down the one crew that is working against her – Trinity. Trinity is after Chak Chal, a key, and a silver box with all the powers needed to unleash whatever Trinity is looking for. From this adventure, Jonah is right there next to her from start to finish. My favorite part was the memories from her past, in the home where she grew up. The wall climbing was even a hassle in the easiest mode possible, which made this for a frustrating experience. While I don’t know if this was for all people or my lack of coordination, the game was still a well-developed, engaging storyline from start to finish.
Battle for Azeroth has been so fantastic and a breath of fresh air when it comes to new content to play. New dungeons, raids, and warfronts are the unique and pretty much kick Battlegrounds in the butt. I have had trouble leveling my neck piece which holds all the Azerite that levels three main sections; helm, shoulders, and chest. Leveling up your neck as high as it can go unlocks these pieces and the new abilities that come with it. A couple of months into launch, I am having so much fun with the content; working on my main character, earning and leveling gear and your professions, that I feel there are always things to do. World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is amazing, and it’s hard to put it down!
Do you want to talk about fun times? Going after the army that took down Cayde and his ghost is a relentless journey that will take any player on a whirlwind of an adventure. Chase down the one’s in charge of taking Cayde down, adventure through the Tangled Shores and eventually make your way into the Dreaming City. On the fence? Buy it! Want it? Buy it! Don’t want it? Buy it! Everything that Destiny has needed to become is right here in this expansion. And to make things so much better, patch 2.0.4 is rolling out!
The only thing lacking in my eyes is that the game is missing the campaign mode. Understandably so, with a PC download of 65 gigabytes and about 60 on the Xbox, it’s not a small load. I miss storyline and finding out what happens next in any adventure. It’s what I live for! What I am excited for in this game is “boots on the ground”. This has been the idea since it was announced earlier this year. There is a classic mode that has been very popular in these games, Zombies. Fight the waves and hold them back if you can. Find a group or dive in with a group of friends. The newest addition to the Call of Duty franchise, a Battle Royale style mode, Blackout. This has been fun as hell since I picked it up and had to add this to our favorite games of 2018.
