    Character Profile: Lara Croft

    TheMommyGamersRiseoftheTombRaider20Year

Here’s a riddle for you. What do you get if you combined the X chromosome from Indiana Jones (before Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, of course) with the X chromosome from Bruce Wayne, toss them in a blender with a just a dash of Annie Oakley, and finally pour the whole thing into the mold of a British supermodel? If you guessed Lara Croft, the star of Eidos Interactive’s insanely popular Tomb Raider franchise, you’d be absolutely right. For the past two decades, fans have joined Lara on her globetrotting adventures in video games, comic books, and even two major motion pictures, with a third on the way.

From the heights of the Himalayas to the depths of Atlantis, facing off against deities and doppelgangers or tigers and T-Rexes, Lara Croft has “been there” and “done that”.  Gamers were first introduced to Croft’s world back in 1996, when video game publisher Eidos reached out to her with the tantalizing offer of bringing her various adventures to life as a video game, allowing gamers the opportunity to walk (and run and jump) miles in her shoes. The first Tomb Raider hit store shelves and, before long, fans couldn’t get enough of Lara Croft.

One game wasn’t enough to stave off gamers’ thirst for adventure and their craving for this new heroine. So Croft and Eidos expanded their deal, leading to the release of a second Tomb Raider game … and a third … and a fourth. Games started popping up everywhere,  from PC to Mac, Dreamcast to PlayStation, Game Boy to PSP, PS3 to Xbox 360, and even now on iOS to Android and PlayStation 4 to Xbox One … if there’s been a gaming platform within the past twenty years, Lara Croft probably been on it.

So what’s a girl to do after she’s conquered the digital world? Why, go after the entertainment world, of course. Just a couple of years after the success of the first Tomb Raider game, Hollywood started to take an interest in Lara Croft and her international exploits.  Of course, with Croft keeping herself busy travelling the world in search of rare artifacts, it’s not like she could take time out of her busy agenda to work around a film’s shooting schedule.  So who would filmmakers pick to fill Lara’s … er … holsters?

None other than Angelina Jolie.  Jolie’s look and attitude brought Lara to life on the big screen, not once but twice, in Paramount’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and the sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life in 2003.  Fans seemed to enjoy the live action take on Lara Croft, as both movies earned sizeable box office receipts. Even now, Warner Bros. and MGM have green lit a new Tomb Raider feature film reboot for 2018, with Alicia Vikander taking over the role of the intrepid adventurer.

After twenty years, Lara Croft still inspires people to overcome obstacles, to face their fears, to become better and stronger in the face of adversity, and to believe that they can accomplish anything. And Lara’s story is far from over.  With her new movie in the works, an upcoming PlayStation 4 release of The Rise of the Tomb Raider, and the ongoing comic book series from Dark Horse Comics, 2016 is definitely shaping up to be The Year of the Tomb Raider. And the most famous spelunker in video game history shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Remakes Are Officially Out Of Control

    What happened to originality?

    Clue Movie

With the announcement today of a Clue remake, I have officially had enough of remakes in Hollywood. I have tried to be ok with remakes as long as possible, as I see the potential good they can do. They can reintroduce classics to an entirely new generation of movie watchers, and I get that. I have tried to watch some classic movies with my kids, who turned their noses up because it looked, “too old.” Giving a new spin on a classic can help grow interest with younger fans. However, enough is seriously enough.

The first time I was irked by a remake was the 2010 remake of Nightmare on Elm StreetNightmare on Elm Street was one of my favorites when I was younger, and I knew that they weren’t going to do Freddy Krueger justice. I was correct. They focused too heavily on the pedophile aspect and turned what was originally a fun, yet scary, horror film into a genuinely upsetting and cringeworthy pile of crap. Even the always amazing Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) couldn’t save it.

    Freddy Krueger

The next remake to get under my skin was the Fright Night remake. Fright Night has been on my list of top 5 movies since I first saw it at the tender age of 9. I used to obsess over that movie. I had a huge crush on William Ragsdale’s (Herman’s Head) Charley Brewster for years. When I heard there was a remake being made, I knew there was no way they would be able to recapture the magic of the original. I avoided watching it for the longest time, but eventually the pull of David Tennant (Doctor Who) and a bout of morbid curiosity got the best of me. My fears were all justified. They completely stripped the story of its “Boy Who Cried Wolf” theme which was the soul of the movie.

The straight to video Fright Night 2: New Blood is a better remake of the original than the star studded 2010 was. If you want a halfway decent remake, you can check Fright Night 2 out on Netflix.

    Jerry Dandridge Fright Night

I know your feels, Jerry, I really do.

Then came the news that M. Night Shyamalan is rebooting Tales From the Crypt without the inclusion of the Cryptkeeper. I loved Tales From the Crypt so much when I was younger, I carved “TFTC” into almost everything I owned. I had posters of the Cryptkeeper on my wall and even went so far as to collect all of the original EC comics the show was based on. To hear the “King of the Crappy Twists” is going to be overseeing one of my all time most beloved shows is killing me inside.

Don’t get me wrong, some remakes have been fine. I enjoyed Ghostbusters immensely. Despite all of the hate, it was truly an entertaining movie. This trend in Hollywood to just regurgitate what they see has worked in the past has got to stop. At the very least, if remakes are going to be made, they need to be treated with reverence and respect. Not to completely change the entire original theme of the movie.

What do you think? Are you tired of seeing remakes in Hollywood? Is there one in particular that has upset you? Or one that you really liked? Let us know in the comments below or on our Twitter or Facebook.

    Movie Review: The Nut Job

nut-jobI would first like to say I’m not normally a movie critic, I’m just a daddy that has a young son. I base my recommendations off  what my son enjoys, and if I can enjoy the movie as well. That being said lets get down to what the movie is described as:

A comedy in fictional Oakton that follows the story of Surly (voiced by Will Arnett), a mischievous squirrel, and his rat friend Buddy, who plan a elaborate scheme of amazing proportions to rob a nut store  and unknowingly find themselves enter-twined in a much more complicated plot.

the-nut-job-movie-photo-11-thumb-600x337-45170I describe the film as a mediocre animated story about a anti-hero squirrel and his rat companion as they strive at a chance at redemption. The movie relies mostly on slap stick comedy and fart jokes to illicit laughter. Normally this is funny to my five year old… but my son laughed a total of four times. He laughs more at a Phineas and Ferb episode in 30  minutes than he in this 90 minute snooze-fest.

The voice acting is decent at times and then in other points it is as if the voice just doesn’t match the facial reactions. The only redeeming points in the film happen five minutes before the end of the movie, which I won’t spoil for those intent on watching it. I however would like to say this, do yourself a favor  and spend your money elsewhere.

Play God Day – January 9th

    app_pocketgod2

Tired of people telling you they can’t stand your “God complex”? Well, today is your day to let that personality flaw shine like a heavenly light!

January 9th is an exceptionally obscure, obscure holiday…Play God Day. While I was unable to ascertain exactly what Play God Day means, I have some suggestions on how to celebrate it.

    Suggested game: Pocket God
I remember when this game came out five years ago. Developed by Bolt Creative, Pocket God allows you to…well…play God. You’re given an island, some pygmies, and you can choose to be kind, or creatively cruel. The game is available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Facebook.

MV5BMTYwMTUyNzAxMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMDYwOTY3._V1_SX640_SY720_  Suggested movie: Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey

In Bruce Almighty, Bruce Nolan (Carrey) blames God for all of his problems and goes into a fit of rage. God (Morgan Freeman) decides to step aside and see if Bruce can do his job better. It’s a cheesy movie, but what more would you expect from Jim Carrey?

Or you could skip the games and movies and just do whatever you think God would do for a day. Be kind to your friends, do nice things for others, forgive someone for something you’ve been holding onto way too long. And if you believe God is evil, go out and stomp on some ants* or something. It’s your day, have fun!

*Please note that we at The Mommy Gamers do not condone violence against ants or anything else. Not much anyway.
