    V-MODA Crossfade M-100 Review

    A New Contender Has Arrived

When searching for the ideal gaming headset, there are a few things I look for: good aesthetic design, comfort, excellent microphone quality, and a decent price range. I had yet to venture outside of the $100-175 range, but V-MODA just changed that for me.

I was pretty excited when the mail man delivered my package. The review kit I received included:

    V-MODA Crossfade M-100 ($310):

    • Exoskeleton hard case
    • Crossfade M-100 headset over-ear/noise isolating headset
    • 1-button speak easy mic cable
    • SharePlay audio cable
    • 1/4″ 24k gold pro adapter

    V-MODA BoomPro ($30)

    • BoomPro mic
    • 3.5mm Y-adapter

My husband was kind enough to record an unboxing video for us (I was being camera shy that day), you can check that out below.

    Thoughtful Packaging

First things first. It’s obvious a lot of thought went into the packaging. The box is sturdy and has a suede handle and button clasp. There was also a small red ribbon that needed to be cut before the box could be opened. “This is something like grand that’s about to happen here” John notes. I share his excitement.

The headset’s CliqFold metal hinge allows it to be neatly stored within it’s own clam shell case. At first I tried putting them back into the case after each use, but I use them frequently and it got old fairly quick. However, I do see the value of having a travel case and anyone that travels with their headset will certainly appreciate it. The wires are neatly wrapped inside with reusable Velcro ties and are held in place with elastic bands at each end of the clam shell. This is a great example of the care and thought that went into the packaging. It even has a carabiner clip so that the case can be easily hung from backpacks, etc.

    Impressive Sound Quality

While the sound quality of music and video games was great, the headset made it painfully obvious how shitty cell/VoIP calls really sound. This is also the part where I tell you it has a ‘unique sound signature characterized by its addictive deep yet clean bass, vibrant mids, and clear highs’ but I won’t bullshit you. I’m not an audiophile. I’ll just do you the favor of linking to some other reviews, at the end of this post, that can describe the exceptional sound quality in detail. What I can tell you is that it was voted 2013 and 2014 “Best DJ Headphone” by DJ Mag. I’m pretty sure that’s a big deal.

The BoomPro is a professional-grade boom mic for gaming, Skype, broadcast/podcast. It’s compatible with all headphones that have a 3.5mm port and has a SteelFlex adjustable boom arm. Besides gaming and streaming with it, I did get a chance to record a couple of voice overs and I was really impressed with the quality. I normally use my Blue Yeti to record The Mommy Gamers podcast but I’m considering a switch to the Crossfade M-100 since it sounded THAT good and I wear a headset anyway. One thing to note is that the mic does not come with a windsock. I positioned it the way I would have with my previous headset but I found myself popping P’s. Adjusting the mic to be a bit further away from my mouth seemed to curb the problem. However, if you feel strongly about having a windsock, you can purchase one for under $2 on Amazon.

    V-MODA Crossfade M-100 vs. Competitor

    V-MODA Crossfade M-100 vs. Competitor

    Comfort and Durability

The Crossfade M-100 over-the-ear headset is fairly lightweight (280g) and incredibly comfortable. They have an adjustable ergonomic steelflex headband and fit perfectly over my ears. I don’t think that was the case for John, so he and those with larger ears will be happy to know that they offer XL Memory Cushions for $20. The cables included are Kevlar reinforced (great news for me since I have a kitten that likes nibbling on wires) and able to withstand 1+ million cable bends. The headband will survive 10+ flat bends.

    V-MODA Crossfade M-100

    V-MODA Crossfade M-100

The BoomPro wires are also Kevlar reinforced. It has a mute switch and rotary volume control which seemed a little sensitive. I found myself unintentionally lowering the volume while shifting in my seat. Clipping it to my shirt eliminated the problem. The mic itself can be attached to the left or the right side of the headset and since it’s removable there’s no longer a need for gamers to have separate headsets for music and gaming.

    V-MODA BoomPro

    V-MODA BoomPro

Although not included in my kit, V-MODA also offers the CoilPro ($30) which extends listening reach by 12 feet for DJ booths, electronic music instruments or productions studios.

    Stylish Design

The headset itself is available in Matte Black, White Silver and Shadow. The shields come in a variety of colors and can be customized with laser engraving for FREE with purchase of the Crossfade M-100s on the V-MODA website ($45 value). While the look of the shields didn’t originally appeal to me, seeing images of them customized started to seduce me. There are currently 19 different colors available with Dark Purple and Electric Pink (YES!) among them.

Overall the V-MODA Crossfade M-100s are a stylish, comfortable, durable and great sounding headset worth the $310 price point. I will definitely be buying a set for my husband and we’ve already been discussing how we’ll customize them.

Big thanks to V-MODA for the review kit and for making an impressive first impression.

    Where To Purchase

You can purchase your own Crossfade M-100s (with Free laser engraving – $45 value) and BoomPro directly from V-MODA or alternatively you can order from Amazon. They are also available at Best Buy, Ralph Lauren at Macy’s, Brookstone and Microsoft Stores.

    Product Review: GlomTom

    HMN90YJK_1393135373733

As is probably evident from my chatter on the podcast and online in general, I play a lot of games. Most evenings once the kids go to bed I park myself in front of my TV, grab a controller, and spend about four hours in that position until I finally give in to sleep. Given that I spend so many hours playing games I’m constantly seeking a way to make that activity more comfortable.

I have a tendency to rest my arms on my legs when I play and that position causes me to kind of roll my back and shoulders forward. This is especially problematic for me because I have a bad right shoulder due to an old injury. My solution to this problem was to stack a bunch of pillows on my lap so my arms were supported and my back was in the right position. The pillow solution works but it’s unwieldy at best and doesn’t really support my whole arm unless I use enormous pillows.

Given all of that I was super pleased to see GlomTom had created a product that solved my arm position issue extremely effectively. The GlomTom is a u-shaped pillow that sits around your waist and supports your arm when you hold a controller or tablet. It’s got a slight angle to it, 15 degrees to be precise, which puts your arms in a more natural position than if they were draped along your legs with no support.

My kid is never going to give this back.

My kid is never going to give this back.

I spent about a week with the GlomTom standing in for my usual pillow method and I can honestly say I’m impressed. The pillow itself is extremely sturdy and actually supports my arms without them sinking into it. The GlomTom wraps around the sides of my waist which means my whole forearm and elbow are supported and nothing hangs off. My back and shoulders stay in the right position and I don’t have the hassle of stacking a million pillows on my lap in an effort to avoid stiffness and discomfort.

The cover is removable and washable which anyone with kids knows is a must. There is also a neat little pocket at the front which I didn’t have much use for but my four year old son really liked being able to put his water bottle there while he played. In fact my son tried to claim the GlomTom as his after it was in the house for only 24 hours. He loves putting the thing on his lap, throwing his tablet on it, and playing. His exact words were “Mommy, this pillow is rad!” He’s right the GlomTom can be described as rad.

Well the cat has claimed it. Now I KNOW I'm never getting it back.

Well the cat has claimed it. Now I KNOW I’m never getting it back.

If you’re reading this and finding yourself interested you can order the GlomTom online for a reasonable $60. There is also an app in both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store that they use to give out special offers. Considering the build quality of the GlomTom I think $60 is a fair price but if you can score a special offer to it a bit that’s a no brainer.

I can honestly say I’ll be using this particular gaming accessory for years. I’m not usually one for specialty items like this but the GlomTom truly makes playing games more comfortable for me. It’s a wonderful bonus that my son also enjoys using it. If he keeps stealing it I may have cause to get a second one in the house so I don’t have to share. Actually I may have to get the cat one too or I’ll have to face her furry wrath every time I want to play video games with the GlomTom.

    Indiegogo: The G-pad

    Indiegogo The G-pad

I’ve never been much of a small-electronics gamer in the past, but now that I’m a smartphone enthusiast I definitely like to play games on the go. On-screen controls, however, can be pretty difficult to use. Enter the G-pad – a silicone slip-over for your iPod Touch, or other select iPhone models, that will give you physical Game Boy Advance-like controls.

I love this idea, and I love small-denomination crowd funding. So if you’re an iThing user, and you love to play GBA games, you might want to give the G-pad a few dollars.

Learn more about the G-pad here at indiegogo.com.

    GlaDOS

Although I haven’t actually played Portal – scandal! – I have an MMO character named GlaDOS, and I love the song from the first game.

But don’t you wish you could really do science with Aperature’s evil AI? Well now thanks to NASA you can! Let’s learn about fusion and fission with GlaDOS today! And be sure to watch all the way to the end. She’s so evil.

(Dear NASA: Please, please, please make more of these! Pretty please with mashed potatoes?)

TurtleBeachPX5I just saw this, and felt the need to pass it along. Amazon.com has the Turtle Beach Ear Force PX5 Programmable Wireless 7.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound Headset (manufacturer refurbished), normally selling for $250, for $95. Turtle Beach Headset Trade-Up Fun

    turtle-beach

Earlier this week I posted about the Turtle Beach trade-up program at PAX Prime. Gamers who were one of the first one hundred PAX attendees to come to the Turtle Beach booth Saturday, August 31 with a pair of gaming headsets from one of their competitors got to trade them in for a brand new XP SEVEN.

I packed my old Tritton headset for the trip to Seattle and brought it to the Turtle Beach booth. My daughter Hannah and I got the chance to check out what has changed in gaming headset technology since I purchased my last headset five years ago.

pax 2013 522 We spoke with David Lowey, one of the public relations people for Turtle Beach, and he said that people were tripping over each other trying to be one of the first 100 to get to the booth. As you can see from the pile of old headsets, they had a great turn-out.

I got one of the coveted XP SEVEN headsets, and although it comes with very simple instructions on how to set them up on any of my devices, I have yet to try them out. I have however tried them on, and they are incredibly comfortable. I’m not saying I have an odd-sized head or anything, but I have tried on headsets in the past that just don’t feel right. These do, and I can’t wait to sit down this weekend and try them on everything I own.

Hannah got a smaller headset, the PX22, which can be used on pretty much any device. Here’s what Hannah has to say about her new headset:

“At PaxPrime, I received a set of PX22 headphones from the Turtle Beach booth and I love them! Once I got the headset, I instantly plugged them into my iPod and the sound was incredible! I really enjoy using the PX22 and I highly recommend Turtle Beach.”

For more information on the Turtle Beach XP SEVENs and other products, visit their website.

*My daughter and I received an XP SEVEN headset and the PX22 headset for free, however our opinions on the headsets are our own. For more details check out our disclosure page

Turtle Beach Giving Away 100 XP SEVENs at PAX Prime

B0094MYU4M_05Have an old headset laying around? Looking to upgrade or try something new? Attending PAX Prime this weekend?

If you answered yes to these questions (especially the last one) make sure you toss your old headset in your suitcase before you hop on the plane tomorrow. Gamers attending PAX Prime in Seattle can bring in their old gaming headsets and trade-up to a brand new, tournament-grade XP SEVEN surround sound gaming headset from Turtle Beach.

Be one of the first one hundred PAX attendees to come to the Turtle Beach booth Saturday, August 31 with a pair of gaming headsets from one of their competitors and they will trade them for a brand new XP SEVEN.

    Goodbye old friend.

    Goodbye old friend.

I will be retiring my Tritton Ax Pro headset. I feel like I’m dumping an old boyfriend. I’ve had this headset for five years now. My husband actually bought this for me at the GamerTag Radio Community Vibes event, one of the first events I ever attended. We’ve had great times, but the lure of a brand new headset…for FREE? Well, it was just too hard to say no.

If you want to participate in this trade-in awesomeness, you can’t just bring any old headset. Check out the fine print:

    • Only gaming headsets with stereo sound or surround sound and integrated chat will be accepted
    • The offer does not apply to chat-only communicators
    • The offer does not apply to ear buds
    • The offer does not apply to Turtle Beach brand headsets
    • One hundred XP SEVENs are available on a first-come first-served basis
    • Trade-up program only on Saturday, August 31
    • One trade-up per person

XP SEVENs have a MSRP of $279.95.

Keep an eye out for a follow up article while I’m at PAX Prime this weekend. For more information on Turtle Beach products, including the XP SEVENs, check out their website.

And here’s an unboxing video, just because we like unboxing videos:
